Franchising represents one of the key ways to commercialise intellectual property (IP) that is, to bring IP to the market through practical implementation. It is a business model for expanding successful enterprises, based on a replicable business system that operates through the creation of a “franchise.” A franchise is an independent business that implements the same model as the original, offering identical products or services under the same brand and visual identity. Well-known examples of franchises include major fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Subway.
The European IP Helpdesk team has just released a new fact sheet “Commercialising Intellectual Property: Franchising.” It is designed to help readers understand the concept of franchising and, in particular, why it represents an attractive business model from both the franchisor’s and the franchisee’s perspectives.
