Indian companies looking to expand internationally should treat intellectual property (IP), trade agreements, regulatory compliance and contractual safeguards as interconnected elements of their export strategy, according to the report “From India to the World” by the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) and RNA Technology and IP Attorneys.

The report argues that successful internationalisation requires more than registering IP rights or carrying out compliance checks shortly before entering a new market. Instead, businesses should integrate decisions on IP protection, Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) assessments, brand clearance, FTA utilisation, customs documentation and contractual arrangements into their commercial planning from an early stage.

In particular, decisions on where and when to seek IP protection should be aligned with product launches, target markets, distributor relationships, manufacturing strategies and investment plans. This integrated approach can help companies identify risks before market entry, protect their competitive position and make better use of international trade opportunities.

The report highlights a broader shift in the role of IP for exporters: rather than being treated primarily as a legal or defensive matter, intellectual property can become a strategic business asset that supports market confidence, international growth and long-term competitiveness.
