India continues to play a central role in the global pharmaceutical landscape as a leading supplier of affordable generic medicines. The country provides nearly 20% of the world’s generics, supporting access to essential healthcare across both developing and developed markets.
At the same time, India faces ongoing pressure—particularly from the United States—regarding its intellectual property (IP) framework for pharmaceuticals. Critics argue for stronger protection, while India maintains that its system is fully compliant with international trade rules, including WTO obligations.

As global demand for accessible treatments grows, India’s position remains a key factor in shaping discussions on IP, innovation, and public health worldwide.
