The National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) reports that the 13th edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services is now available, and its use will be mandatory for new trade mark applications filed in Chile from January 1, 2026, in accordance with the provisions of article 6, letter c) of the Regulations of the Industrial Property Law.

This update is part of the annual work of the Nice Union's committee of experts and aims to keep the catalog of products and services of INAPI's electronic search platform aligned with the dynamics of the international market.

The update to the international standard for classifying products and services will be mandatory for new trade mark applications filed in Chile from 2026 onwards. Applications filed before that date will retain their original classification.

The Nice Classification is the international system that organizes goods and services for trade mark use into 45 classes. A new edition is published every five years, and since 2013, each edition has been updated annually to reflect market developments and technical adjustments agreed upon by the Nice Union's committee of experts.

Main changes in the ranking

The 13th edition introduces adjustments that move certain products and services to new classes. Among the most relevant changes:

  • Class 9: no longer includes optical products, rescue vehicles, and diving lights.
  • Class 10: includes optical products such as glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses.
  • Class 12: adds fire engines to its catalog, reinforcing its focus on vehicles and means of transport.
  • Class 25: now includes electrothermal clothing or heated clothing, which were previously included in Class 11, along with heating appliances and devices.

These changes aim to strengthen the functional consistency of the classification system, facilitating the correct identification of products and services in the trade mark application process.
