The European Commission has opened a public consultation on the upcoming revision of the EU standardisation regulation, inviting stakeholders to contribute to the future of Europe’s standardisation system. The revision, planned for adoption in 2026, will play a key role in ensuring that standards remain a strong driver of competitiveness, innovation, and global influence.
Announced in the Competitiveness Compass earlier this year, the initiative responds to long-standing concerns about standard-setting delays, which have been identified as barriers to the smooth functioning of the single market. By making the process faster, more inclusive, and better aligned with policy priorities, the revised regulation will strengthen the EU’s position as a global leader in standardisation while supporting the twin green and digital transitions.
For businesses, and in particular SMEs and startups, standards are not only technical tools but also powerful instruments for market access, interoperability, and legal certainty. The proposed revision seeks to ensure that smaller players can participate more effectively in shaping standards that affect their operations and competitiveness. This aligns with the broader goals of Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012, which emphasises openness, transparency, and stakeholder representation in the European standardisation system.
The public consultation is open until 17 December 2025.
