The Global Innovation Index (GII) ranks the world's top economies by their innovation capabilities. A common trait among the highest-ranking countries is the presence of strong science and technology (S&T) clusters. The GII's top-100 S&T Cluster ranking provides a more detailed view by analysing patent filings and scientific publications to pinpoint local hubs of world-class science and technology activity. The GII 2024 presents S&T clusters beyond the top 100 in order to shed light on other areas around the world with an appreciably high level of science and technology.
Among the top 100 S&T clusters, Tokyo–Yokohama (Japan) is the top performing cluster, followed by Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou (China and Hong Kong, China). Both clusters rank one and two owing to having a large output of PCT applications.
Brazil stands as the only Latin American country with an S&T cluster ranked in the top 100. Beyond this, other middle-income economies in the region, like Argentina and Mexico, also make the extended list with notable science and technology clusters in Buenos Aires and Mexico City, respectively.
