German Publisher Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

Penguin Random House has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that its AI tool ChatGPT infringed copyright by generating content closely resembling a popular German children’s book series. The case, brought before a court in Munich, concerns the well-known “Coconut the Little Dragon” books by author Ingo Siegner.

According to the publisher, ChatGPT was able to produce text and illustrations that were “virtually indistinguishable” from the original works when prompted by users. The company also claims that the AI suggested creating print-ready materials, including cover designs and promotional content, potentially encouraging the distribution of infringing works.

The lawsuit targets OpenAI’s European subsidiary based in Ireland. Penguin Random House stated that it had previously requested the removal of the content but did not receive a response.

The case highlights growing concerns around copyright protection in the age of generative AI.
