European IP Helpdesk Joins EUTechSovereignity2025 Conference and National Knowledge Valorisation Day in Poland

Last week, the European IP Helpdesk joined the #EUTechSovereignity2025 conference and National Knowledge Valorisation Day hosted on 26 and 27 May by the Polish Chamber of Commerce for High Technology and University of Warsaw under the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

While the sessions of the #EUTechSovereignity2025 conference focused on how Europe can safeguard technological sovereignty by leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence and enhanced industry-academia cooperation to bring disruptive technologies to the market, the discussions during the Knowledge Valorisation Day co-organised with DG Research & Innovation delved even deeper into the various facets of transforming scientific research into sustainable solutions to benefit economy and society.

With a number of new policy initiatives underway, including the most recent launch of the EU’s Scaleup and Startup strategy, special emphasis was put on how to sustain investment for startups (public and private) to bolster business growth and help close the innovation gap in the long run. Moreover, with discussions around the next EU Framework Programme 10 gaining momentum, special attention was drawn to the question of embedding knowledge valorisation processes more rigorously and systematically across different project types and stages, as well as measuring those more effectively in the future.

“We need to ensure we have knowledge valorisation measures in place in all projects across FP10, also cutting across all maturity levels including basic research. Plus, we need to get better in combining and analysing different data, to assess the impact and value created with our funding more thoroughly and in a more meaningful way,” commented Ioannis Sagias, Deputy Head of Unit for Valorisation Policies and IPR, DG Research and Innovation/EC in his keynote talk.

Proficient and effective collaborative intellectual property (IP) management is a key building block in advancing and sustaining impactful R&I ecosystems in Europe. To this end, Jörg Scherer, coordinator of the European IP Helpdesk, in his session, put a particular spotlight on collaborative intellectual asset management to foster innovation in multi-stakeholder R&I environments, highlighting a suite of existing support services and initiatives, such as European IP Helpdesk, the Impact Licensing Europe, IP4OS, or IAM4RE, which were complemented by presentations of the Booster or the widerAdvance Facility project. “These initiatives are critical, especially for researchers and SMEs participating in collaborative environments, to build capacities and enable them to navigate different IP issues and interests arising in those complex, multi-layered research and innovation settings,” Scherer concluded.
