The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has released its latest report “Study on the Contribution of Intellectual Property Right-Intensive Industries to Economic Performance and Employment in Colombia.” The study highlights the vital role of intellectual property (IP) in Colombia’s economy, aligning with the EUIPO’s broader initiatives to foster IP development across Latin America.
The study evaluates the overall impact of IP-intensive industries on Colombia’s economy from 2018 to 2022. It examines key economic indicators such as total employment, direct and indirect job creation, gross value added, exports, imports, and remuneration.
Moreover, it categorises IP into three legal groups:
- Industrial Property Rights – including patents, industrial designs, trademarks, and geographical indications, with data sourced from Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC).
- Copyright and Related Rights – overseen by the National Directorate of Copyright (DNDA).
- Plant Variety Rights – regulated by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA).
