The Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) of the European Commission convened in Brussels to strengthen their partnership by signing a revised Administrative Agreement. This renewed collaboration builds on a longstanding relationship, focusing on improving the protection and management of geographical indications (GIs) for agricultural products, wines, and spirits across the European Union (EU).
Through enhanced collaboration, the EUIPO and DG AGRI seek to improve public access to information on GIs, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, and boost international recognition of Europe’s diverse range of geographically rooted products.
This agreement represents significant progress in safeguarding Europe’s cultural traditions while increasing the value of GIs for both consumers and producers. Furthermore, it aligns with the EUIPO’s upcoming role as the EU’s competent authority for craft and industrial GIs, starting in December 2025.
