Delhi High Court Rules on ANI’s Copyright Claims Against OpenAI

The Delhi High Court has issued an interim ruling in the high-profile copyright dispute between Asian News International (ANI) and OpenAI, finding that OpenAI’s use of ANI’s content to train ChatGPT did not amount to copyright infringement. 

ANI, one of India’s major news agencies, had brought proceedings alleging copyright infringement both from the use of its content during the training of OpenAI’s models and from the reproduction of its articles in AI-generated outputs. The ruling concerns ANI’s application for a temporary injunction and therefore does not determine the case as a whole, which remains ongoing. The decision marks one of the first substantive findings by an Indian court on the use of copyrighted news content to train large language models without a license, an issue also being litigated in other jurisdictions
