Costa Rica Digitalises Trademark Publication Process

Costa Rica has introduced a new digital procedure for the publication of trademark and other distinctive sign notices, streamlining the application process and reducing administrative burdens for applicants.

Under Directive DPI-001-2026, in force since 2 February 2026, the Intellectual Property Registry now transmits publication notices directly to the National Printing Office in electronic format. Each notice is authenticated with an institutional electronic seal, while applicants are notified to pay the corresponding publication fee. Once the notice is published in the official gazette La Gaceta, the publication date and time are automatically recorded in the Registry's public consultation system.

The new procedure eliminates the need for applicants to collect publication notices from the Registry and submit them to the National Printing Office themselves, making the registration process more efficient and supporting the ongoing digitalisation of Costa Rica's intellectual property services.
