The European Commission has signed a new agreement with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), effective immediately, to reinforce the enforcement of intellectual property (IP) rights within the framework of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The partnership aims to enhance the Commission’s capacity to address systemic risks related to IP infringements on very large online platforms and search engines (VLOPs and VLOSEs). These risks include the spread of counterfeit goods, online piracy, and other forms of IP-infringing content.
Under the agreement, the EUIPO will also expand its activities to support judicial and enforcement authorities, as well as online intermediaries beyond VLOPs and VLOSEs, in tackling IP-related risks. It will further assist IP rights holders in protecting their assets in the digital environment.
The DSA establishes a comprehensive framework for a safer and more transparent online ecosystem in the EU. This strengthened cooperation highlights the importance of coordinated action among European institutions to safeguard fundamental rights, including intellectual property.
