Brazil becomes the first country in Latin America to offer the Madrid System e-Filing service

On 20 April 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced that the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial, INPI) had joined Madrid e-Filing. Brazil is the first country in Latin America to offer this service, bringing the total number of participating offices to 41.

Madrid e-Filing is a digital service within the Madrid System that allows trade mark holders to file international applications entirely online, communicate directly with their office of origin, and receive and respond to irregularity notices issued by WIPO in digital format. This replaces the traditional paper-based workflow, which has historically been associated with delays and administrative bottlenecks.

Since joining the Madrid Protocol in October 2019, Brazil has recorded consistent growth in international trade mark applications filed through the system. The introduction of Madrid e-Filing strengthens this trend and brings INPI's digital infrastructure in line with that of other major offices in the network.

This development simplifies the management of international applications designating Brazil for European businesses seeking trade mark protection in the country. Those filing through the Madrid System can now expect swifter communication with the INPI, as well as a reduced risk of procedural errors arising from paper-based exchanges.
