When a work enters the public domain, it becomes a collective cultural asset, open for anyone to use and adapt. Artists, educators, and businesses can draw from this abundant resource, integrating public domain works into new creations without concerns about copyright violations. This freedom fosters significant creative possibilities, encouraging fresh artistic expressions, educational resources, and cultural preservation projects, all of which contribute to the shaping of our shared cultural legacy.

In 2025, a wide array of artworks and celebrated figures will enter the public domain in the European Union, marking a significant moment as the masterpieces of renowned artists become part of our collective cultural heritage.

Among examples are:

  • Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo and André Derain’s paintings
  • Robert Capa’s photographies
  • Zofia Nalkowska, Colette, Stig Dagerman and Martin Andersen Nexo’s literary works

In conclusion, the transition of creative works into the public domain presents a wealth of opportunities for innovation and the preservation of culture. Although the removal of legal restrictions opens up new possibilities, it is crucial to understand the nuances of other laws, rights, and responsibilities to ensure the responsible use of these artistic treasures.
