The European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), together with the European Commission, has officially launched the 12th edition of the European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital). The announcement was made in Aalborg, Denmark, the current 2026 European Rising Innovative City.
The launch event brought together policymakers and innovation leaders to discuss topics shaping Europe’s innovation landscape, including the green transition, innovation ecosystems, emerging industries, and public–private collaboration.
The iCapital Awards recognise European cities that foster innovation through strong cooperation between public and private stakeholders, support entrepreneurship, and implement forward-looking policies that improve the quality of life for citizens. The initiative aims to showcase cities that can inspire others through their innovative approaches to urban development.
Applications are now open to cities from EU Member States and Horizon Europe Associated Countries. Interested cities can submit their applications until 4 August 2026 (17:00 CEST).
